Day 1

Choosing Marriage
on Purpose

Scripture

"I have set before you life and death… therefore choose life."

Deuteronomy 30:19

"Choose this day whom you will serve… as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

Joshua 24:15

We almost didn't make it to year one.

We had remodeled that little 960-square-foot house together. Caleb was a firefighter, gone every third day. And one afternoon I came home angry about something I honestly can't even remember now — and I said I was leaving. Going to my daddy's.

Caleb took my keys. Locked both deadbolts from the inside. And I was furious. Because I always had an option. An out. The D-word had been in my back pocket since before we even said vows — not because I didn't love him, but because I had grown up seeing aunts, uncles, cousins, even my grandparents split up. I had the misconception that that's just what happened when things got hard.

That day, Caleb made it clear: divorce was not an option. That word would never be spoken in our home. I was shocked — yet I took him up on that. Twenty-seven years later, it still hasn't been.

Something shifted in me when he said it. Because for the first time, the door wasn't just closed — it was gone. And we had to figure out how to live in the room we were in.

That's what this whole thing comes down to. Marriage doesn't stay strong on its own. Left alone, it drifts. Not dramatically — just quietly. A little less conversation. A little more assumption. More distance than you meant to let in.

God's been showing us that from the beginning. Life with Him is a choice you make again and again — not once. Marriage is built the same way. You don't stay connected because everything feels right. You stay connected because you choose to show up when it doesn't.

"That word would never be spoken again in our house… divorce was not an option."

Where have I been coasting instead of choosing?

What does choosing my marriage look like in action today?
